RAHS trio qualifies for state wrestling tourney

Three members of the Roseville Area High School wrestling team will close out their seasons by competing at the state wrestling tournament this weekend. All are juniors and each qualified for state by finishing second in their respective weight classes at the Section 4AAA meet on Saturday.

December Htoo, Tyler Graham and Isaac Schmaedeke will represent their team and school on Friday and maybe Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Htoo wrestles at 126 pounds and won twice to advance to the finals at the section tournament. He lost a 4-2 decision in the finals to Woodbury’s Ty Johnson but bounced back to beat Tartan’s Kyle Taylor in the true second-place match. Htoo heads to state with a record of 30-6.

Graham, a 160-pounder, also won his first two matches to reach the finals, where he lost 21-5 to Howard Jones of Woodbury. Despite the loss, Graham had already clinched a spot in the state tournament because he had already defeated the wrestler who ended up finishing third. Graham’s record at the end of the section tourney is 29-10.

At 195 pounds, Schmaedeke won his first two bouts via fall but couldn’t beat Woodbury’s John McNiff in the finals, losing 14-6. Schmaedeke was then forced to win the true-second match, which he did 5-1 over White Bear Lake’s Marcus Gilmore. Schmaedeke takes a record of 24-6 into the state tournament.

The state tournament starts Thursday with the team portion and the individuals take over on Friday and Saturday.
