Ski Jumping: Norge Ski Club jumper tops field of 45 in Feb. 14 valentine tournament

A field of 45 ski jumpers from throughout the Central Division and one from Decatur, Ga., converged on the St. Paul Ski Club’s Nordic complex in Maplewood on Friday, Feb. 14, to participate in a huge “Valentines Ski Jumping Love In.”

Emerging with the top total points of 185.0 was Norge Ski Club (Fox River Grove, Ill.) ski jumper Shane Kocher. The 14-year-old Kocher was skiing in Class 3 for jumpers 12-13 years old.

The tournament -- held in the brisk 8-degree temperatures -- had 45 female and male competitors from five ski jumping clubs.

The skiers, in addition to the St. Paul Ski Club and Norge Ski Club in Fox River, came from Coleraine (Itasca Ski and Outing Club), Eau Claire (Flying Eagles Ski Club), Westby, Wis., and one jumper from Decatur, Ga.

Ski jumpers competed in boy and girls classes from Class 7, under age 5; Class 6, ages 6-7; Class 5, age 8-9; Class 4, ages 10-11; Class 3, 12-13; and Class 2, ages 14-15.

Winners were selected in each class and each competitor received a participation ribbon.

Total points were awarded for distance jumped on two jumps and style. The combination of distance and style points equal total points.

Ski jumping in Class 3, ages 12-13, Kocher amassed his 185.0 points from the 46-meter Harrington Hill with two leaps of 135 feet and style points of 97.

Some competitors competed on more than one of the four hills used for competitions. Those skiers who competed on a smaller hill and in age groupings above the competitions were considered Open Class skiers and their results are not listed below.

The results include the jumper’s name, ski club represented, first and second jump distances and the total points. Where applicable, the top six places will be listed.
