The fifth annual Relay for Life Ice Fishing Tournament is doing double duty. Not only will participating anglers be having fun and raising money to fight cancer, but also will be celebrating the life of a former Tartan High School Relay for Life team member.

The “Fishing for a Cure” ice fishing contest, hosted by team Purple Reign, will take place on Lake Jane in Lake Elmo on Saturday, Feb. 15. This year’s contest is being held in memory David Riggs, a 2011 Tartan graduate who was active in Relay for Life and High Schools Against Cancer while he was a student. Riggs, 20, passed away in August after he was rear-ended by a distracted driver while driving his scooter in Oakdale. He was an organ donor, something friends and family members say he was passionate about.

Purple Reign team captain Kacie Leverty says Riggs and the other members of his team, Relay 911: Lock Up Cancer, loved fishing and thought the tournament was a great way to fundraise for the cause.

Registration for the fishing tournament begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 15, and the contest will run from noon to 3 p.m. Buy one hole for $6 or two for $10, and there will be prizes, raffles and food. The lake access address is 9288 Lake Jane Trail N.

Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society to fund research and support programs for patients and survivors.

Relay for Life is a fundraising event through the American Cancer Society. Teams across the country raise money before walking laps, often overnight or for 24 hours, during a large community event. Tartan’s event is planned to take place on the school’s track on May 16 at 6 p.m.
