Gertens moves into former Linder’s space in Lake Elmo

Gardening aficionados in the metro area were happy last week when Gertens Greenhouse and Garden Centers announced it had purchased the site of the former Linder’s greenhouse in Lake Elmo.

The Inver Grove Heights-based company completed the acquisition of the growing range, located near 15th Street and Inwood Avenue, on Jan. 27. The acquisition includes 52 acres of land, a 12-acre heated greenhouse, four utility buildings and several more acres of nursery growing fields, but does not include the former Linder’s Garden Center retail store on Larpenteur Avenue.

“We are excited about the prospects of growing our business to ensure that we can fulfill the needs of our customers, provide long term opportunities for our staff and continue to build a solid foundation for our future,” Gertens stated in an announcement on its website.

Gertens reports the property will be ready for initial plantings in about a month.

Linder’s Greenhouses, a longtime staple for gardeners in the metro area, closed its doors in October after more than 100 years in business. Owner Dave Linder attributed the closure to a poor growing season in 2013 and declining sales over the years.
