Raiders enter post-season with momentum

For the past four years, the Section 4AA girls hockey championship has come down to Roseville Area High School and Hill-Murray High School. That streak will end this year.

The seedings for this year’s section tournament were released on Sunday and Roseville ended up as the fourth seed while Hill-Murray got the No. 1 spot. That means that if the two squads do square off in the post-season this year, it will be in the semifinals.

Roseville opens the section playoffs on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at home against fifth-seeded White Bear Lake. Despite being seeded one spot apart, there is a large discrepancy between the records of the two teams. Roseville finished with 17 victories while the Bears managed only nine.

In their two games each other during the regular season, Roseville won 3-0 on Dec. 19 and 5-2 on Jan. 28.

Roseville has faced White Bear in the playoffs the last two years and won both match-ups 3-1. Last year’s game was in the quarterfinals and the meeting two years ago was in the semifinals.

The Raiders own a nine-game winning streak over White Bear Lake dating back to the 2010-11 season. The Bears most recent victory over Roseville came on Jan. 4, 2011.

Roseville enters the post-season riding a four-game winning streak that started with a 3-0 win over Anoka on Jan. 21. The Raiders have also beaten Hastings, White Bear Lake and Stillwater during the streak.

The Bears lost their final two games of the regular season and have gone just 3-5 in 2014.

By virtue of its No. 1 seed, Hill-Murray receives a first-round bye in the playoffs because there are only seven teams in the section. The other two quarterfinal games, which take place Saturday at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center, pit third-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall against sixth-seeded Tartan at 1 p.m. and second-seeded Stillwater against seventh-seeded North St. Paul at 3 p.m.
