Eau Claire ski jumper tops field in John R. Lyons Memorial Tournament

Despite the sub-zero temperatures of Jan. 5, the ski jumping tournament at the St. Paul Ski Club’s Carver’s Lake Nordic Site in south Maplewood went on as scheduled.

While many other area events were being called off as a result of the 12-below-zero temps — never mind the wind chills — some 88 ski jumpers from throughout the Central Division showed up for the competitions that were held on the four jumping hills at the club’s facilities.

Competitions was held in eight classes, for both boys and girls, beginning with Class 6, ages 6-7, to Masters Class, over 30 years of age.

Jumpers from eight ski clubs throughout the Central Division competed. The flyers represented ski jumping clubs from: The Blackhawk Ski Club (BSC), Madison; the Cloquet Ski Club (CSC); the Flying Eagles Ski Club (FESC), Eau Claire; Itasca Ski and Outing Club (ISOC), Coleraine, Wisc.; the Kiwanis Ski Club (KSC), Iron Mountain, Mich.; the Minneapolis Ski Club (MSC); the Norge Ski Club (NSC), Fox River Grove, Ill.; and the St. Paul Ski Club (SPSC).

Soaring to 156 and 159 feet and garnering 225.8 points was 15-year old Ben Loomis who competed for the FESC.

The stylish Loomis was competing in Class 2 for jumpers 14 and 15 years of age.

Total points are made up by combining distance points with style points on both jumps. Loomis also topped the field in style points with 125.8.

In second place overall was Class 1 jumper — ages 16-17 — Christian Friberg of the St. Paul Ski Club. The 17-year old compiled 221.0 points on jumps of 153 and 151 feet.
