RAHS gymnastics, boys swimming start 2014 strong
The Roseville Area High School gymnastics and boys swimming and diving teams emerged from the holiday break last week and posted some impressive results.
Roseville’s gymnastics squad, the two-time defending state champion, hosted the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Officials’ Association meet on Saturday and won its division. The Raiders posted a team score of 147.375, their highest of the season thus far, to finish first in Division I.
Wayzata took second place but finished more than seven points behind Roseville.
Freshman Jessica Strecker was the individual Division I champion by virtue of her all-around score of 37.275.
Through six competitions this season, Roseville has yet to be outscored. The Raiders are 4-0 in Suburban East Conference dual meets and have also finished first in a pair of multi-team competitions.
Roseville entered 2014 ranked third in the state in Class AA with a scoring average over its top three meets of 143.467. Northfield, which finished runner-up to Roseville at the last two state meets, was ranked No. 1 with an average of 146.658. Wayzata was second at 143.475.
Northfield will likely retain its top spot in the rankings this week after hitting the 150 mark twice last week. The Raiders scored a 151.4 on Jan. 2 in a dual against New Prague and added a 150.45 in winning the Faribault Invitational on Jan. 4.
Roseville is in action twice this week. The Raiders host Cretin-Derham Hall in a conference dual meet on Thursday and travel to Lakeville North for a multi-team invitational on Saturday.
Boys swimming and diving
The RAHS boys swim team competed twice last week and emerged victorious both times. In the Raiders’ first meet of 2014 on Thursday, they topped Cretin-Derham Hall 103-82.
Two days later, Roseville took part in the Maroon and Gold Invitational at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center and won the Tiger Division. The Raiders posted a team score of 489 and outscored runner-up Alexandria by 103 points.
Roseville has a pair of Suburban East Conference duals on the schedule this week. The Raiders travel to Hastings on Tuesday and host White Bear Lake at the Parkview Middle School pool on Thursday.
