Boys Basketball: Titans expecting to extend 20-win record during boys basketball battles
The Tartan Titans boys basketball team hopes to be a power in the Classic Suburban Conference once again this season.
Coach Mark Klingsporn said recently, “We will return two starters (Brody Jackson and Tommy Hanson) and our entire front court players.
“We lost our entire back court to graduation, but we expect to fill any gaps back there from our highly successful JV and “B” squad teams.”
The JV team last season posted a mark of 20-6 and the Tartan B squad went 25-1.
“We have lots of pride and tradition in this program,” the veteran coach continued. “We have 16-straight 20-plus win seasons. In addition, we have had eight straight state tournament appearances. Our teams always play hard.
“We play together and defend hard. This group of athletes has a chance to be tough by the end of the season.”
The eight-straight tournament appearances were put together from 1998 through 2005. In 2000—led by legendary Jake Sullivan—Tartan won the Class AAAA state title.
Tartan is the two-time defending CSC champion.
Senior co-captains Jackson and Hanson will head the 2013-14 team. Jackson is a 6-foot9 center, while Hanson is a 6-foot-5 forward.
The captains will be backed by seniors Eric Winter, Keenen Bellaphant, Marlon McCoy, Jermaine Borward, Kylon Payne, John Jenkins and Stephen Osuji.
Behind them are juniors Jake Lyle and Deonte Fourte, plus a couple of freshmen, Jordan Horn and Emanuel Humphrey.
Back to assist Klingsporn in his head coaching duties will be JV and assistant varsity coach Bill Fetsch, along with varsity assistants Marlon McCoy and Eric Bronaugh.
Working with the Tartan B squad will be coaches John Carrier and Art Erickson. The Titan freshman squad will be coached by Joe Koenig and Leoardian Horton.
In CSC play, if the Titans are going to three-peat as CSC champions, they will have to fend off the likes of Mahtomedi, Henry Sibley, St. Thomas Academy and Hill-Murray.
