RAHS wrestling gunning for big turnaround
A few years ago the Roseville Area High School wrestling team found itself with a senior-heavy lineup, which helped the team finish above .500. The problem with that situation is that it left the Raiders with a thin senior class last year, when they won just three dual meets.
Head coach Mike Holmes and his staff have retooled the roster and are shooting for a quick turnaround.
“Our goal is to win at least 15 of our 29 regular-season dual meets and get into the section semifinals,” said Holmes, who has been Roseville’s head coach since 1999. “We hope to qualify at least three individuals for the state tourney.”
Leading the way this season are senior captain Josh Klimek and junior captains Tyler Graham and December Htoo. All three have posted third-place finishes in past section individual tournaments and are looking to move up at least one place this year in order to qualify for state. The top two from each weight class at the section tournament advance to the state tournament.
In addition to the experience provided by the captains, Roseville has increased numbers out for the team. Holmes has 30 signed up to wrestle, which is a bit more than usual.
“They are clumped in some weight classes and thin in others, Holmes said. “So we might be forfeiting a weight or two. We’re going to be more experienced at most weights than last year.”
Roseville’s roster also includes a couple of athletic first-year seniors and some decent freshmen. Holmes isn’t sure how many will see varsity time but he would’t rule anyone out either.
Roseville opened the season last Friday with a Suburban East Conference dual competition against Hastings, which started the season ranked No. 4 in the state in Class AAA. Hastings showed why Holmes said he expects it to dominate the conference by beating Roseville 74-0.
On the docket this week is a pair of competitions for Roseville. The Raiders wrestle in a triangular against Cretin-Derham Hall and Park-Cottage Grove on Thursday at Park and compete in a multi-team tournament at Maple Grove on Saturday.
