Mounds View senior captures state title
Mounds View High School senior Kiley Kuether closed out her prep diving career on the highest of high notes last week. Kuether won the Class AA state diving championship on Nov. 20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Kuether amassed 408.05 points over 11 dives to win the state title by almost seven points. Rochester Century sophomore Adrianna Jacobs finished second with 401.15 points.
Kuether, a team captain, trailed Jacobs by eight points heading into Wednesday’s finals. Through the semifinals, Jacobs led with 280.7 points while Kuether had 272.6. Neither Kuether nor Jacobs were in first following the preliminary round. Brainerd/Pillager senior Beth Etterman led following three dives with 189.6 points. Kuether was second at 177.6 and Jacobs was third at 177.15.
Kuether earned 20 team points for Mounds View, which finished 23rd in the final team standings.
Joining Kuether at the state meet were five Mounds View teammates competing in three swimming events.
The foursome of junior Sara Nelson, sophomore McLaren Curphy and seniors Emily Nelson and Maggie Lamere qualified for state in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They finished 13th in the prelims to advance to the consolation heat in the finals but were disqualified in the finals.
Sara Nelson, Curphy and Lamere teamed up with junior Maya Loewen to swim at state in the 200-yard medley relay. They finished 17th in the preliminary round and did not advance to the finals.
Loewen also made state in the 100-yard breaststroke. She did not advance to the finals after finishing 24th in the prelims.
