Returning contingent has RAHS boys hockey optimistic
With a dozen returning letterwinners on the roster, the Roseville Area High School boys hockey team is looking for big things this season.
“A full season of hard work and discipline will hopefully allow us to maximize our potential and give us a chance to make a playoff run,” said first-year head coach Ryan Adams.
Among those 12 returning players is a trio of seniors who put up some decent offensive numbers a season ago. Defenseman Andrew Colvard had 36 points a season ago. Forward Ryan Larson added 33 points and forward Alex Brausen had 26.
Colvard is one of five returning defensemen.Other players to watch this season for the Raiders include junior forwards Bailey Bixby, Matt Irwin and Drew Liberkowski. They also saw some varsity minutes last season and Adams expects them to contribute.
Adams is in his first year as Roseville’s head coach after serving as an assistant under Pete Aus last season. Aus replaced Jeff Pauletti after Pauletti resigned following the 2011-12 season.
“We are working towards using hockey as a vehicle to build young men of quality character,” Adams said. “We will work hard to represent ourselves, our team and our community the best we can.”
Roseville’s biggest question mark is in goal. The starting netminder from last year graduated and the goaltending duties this season fall to a pair of juniors who have seen limited varsity action.
Roseville opens the season with a pair of games this week. The Raiders host Mahtomedi on Tuesday at 8 p.m. and travel south to take on Rochester Century on Friday.
Next week, the Raiders open Suburban East Conference play with a game at Woodbury on Dec. 5 and a home game against Stillwater on Dec. 7.
Cretin-Derham Hall is the defending SEC champion.
