This dish surprised our test cook and our tasters: the cook because pouring the Mountain Dew over the dumplings felt like a chemistry experiment and the tasters because the finished dish had a special tang, apparently from its surprise ingredient.
2 Granny Smith apples
2 cans crescent rolls
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 can Mountain Dew soda -- not diet
Preheat oven to 350° F.
Peel and slice apples into 16 slices. Roll 1 apple slice into each crescent roll and place in a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Combine butter, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan and heat just until the sugar has dissolved. Do not caramelize. Pour over rolls, sprinkle with cinnamon; then pour Mountain Dew over the top of rolls.
Bake for 30 minutes, Then cover with foil and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy.
Great with vanilla ice cream.
Cook’s note: Just add some red and green sprinkles or a few candied cherries for color.
