Wrestling: Tartan returning to wrestling battles with veteran squad
Titans hope to compete for conference crown
The Tartan Titans wrestling team is expected to challenge perennial-favorite Simley for the Classic Suburban Conference title this season.
Simley, which has a long tradition of sending wrestlers to the state tournament, is the defending CSC champion.
But last week Tartan head coach Dan Recchio said, “We are a senior-loaded team” that also has wrestlers with tournament experience.
“We are bringing back several state qualifiers along with many All-Conference performers.”
When asked if the Titans have any possible weaknesses, Recchio stated, “We have some wrestlers coming back from injuries. It is always a question as to how they’ll respond to a full season.”
The coach then added, “I am not naming a captain until they demonstrate their leadership capabilities during the season.”
The Titans are anticipating good performances from several seniors.
Leading the way will be T.J. O’Hara. He is a two-time state qualifier and in 2012 was the Class 3A champion at 152 pounds.
Heavyweight Jason Telin is another senior who has advanced to the state tournament twice. Other seniors who were state qualifiers are Eli McGeehan and Dion Wallisch.
Rounding out the early season roster are All-Conference returnees Peyton Floyd, a junior, and Justin Burg, a sophomore.
Assisting Recchio will be several former Tartan wrestlers, including Joe Recchio, Matt Trulen, Nate Trulen and Ted Luchsinger.
The Titans will open the season at a Saturday, Dec. 7, invitational beginning at 9 a.m. at Fridley.
Tartan will open the conference season Dec. 12 when they travel to St. Thomas Academy to meet the Cadets and Henry Sibley.
The Titans’ home opener will be against non-conference opponents Mora and Harding in a 5 p.m. match Friday, Dec. 20.
