Girls hockey: North opens season with shutout over Park of CG
Larson stops 24 to gain win
North 2 - Park 0
The North High Polars opened the girls hockey season Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Polar Arena with a triumph over the Park of Cottage Grove Wolfpack.
The Polars had a stellar performance from goalie Marit Larson, who stopped all of the 24 missiles Park fired at her.
The Polars and Wolfpack were wary of one another as they tested the other, parrying for an advantage. None came through the first 17 minutes of action.
The opening tally came at 5:29 of the second period.
A feed from Hayley Blom hit the blade of Lily Langevin, who in turn sizzled the back twines with the first North goal of the 2013-14 season.
Just under three minutes later, the Polars pushed their advantage to 2-0 when Haley Schanks combined with Erin Jungman to send a feed across to Sarah Warner. The sophomore winger slipped the puck between the pipes at 8:10 of the second period.
The final goal in the 3-0 win came late in the third period. The Wolfpack had pulled their goaltender in favor of a sixth attacker.
With the Polars a skater short due to a penalty, senior forward Katelyn Stepaniak picked off a loose puck, moved up ice and fired into the empty net at 16:43, just 17 seconds prior to the final horn.
Next up, North will take on the Raiders from Cretin-Derham Hall at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, at Polar Arena.
