Inquiring minds: What’s the most popular candy for Halloween?

Each week the staff at the Roseville Library answers more than 2,500 questions on every subject under the sun. Here are some of the most interesting ones they’ve gotten lately.

Q. What’s the most popular candy for Halloween?

A.  The Today Show did a survey on this last year and turned up some interesting results. Based on sales figures, the hands-down favorite candy for Halloween is candy corn. Close to 20 million pounds of the stuff are sold in the U.S. each year. If, on the other hand, you look for Facebook endorsements, then Skittles is the clear winner, with more than 23 million “likes” to its credit. Of course, you could argue that the most enthusiastic trick-or-treaters are too young either to buy their own candy or to spend much time on Facebook. Until market research figures out how to poll the critical under-8 demographic, we won’t really know what treats the second-graders of America are going to have the highest hopes of finding in their bags this year.
