To the editor:

On August 3, I married Dean Schlaak, my partner of 13 years, with whom I own a business, home, three boxers and a cat.
Friday, October 11th, was National Coming Out Day. I understand what a young person who is gay is going through. Coming out is not easy.
It is comforting to know that we live in a state where people understand that all committed couples should have the same freedoms and voted NO on the Marriage Amendment. Even more, it’s wonderful to live in a state with legislators who voted for the freedom to marry for everyone.

To someone who is considering making the next step in coming out, the best way to do it is on your own time and honestly — not only with yourself but those around you.
