Kozlaks’ owners look for new location
Kozlaks’ Royal Oak Restaurant owners Mark and Lynn Satt will be closing the doors to the spacious location on Hodgson Road that has housed the restaurant since 1977.
The couple informed customers of a proposed purchase agreement via email on July 11.
Mark said that although the restaurant belongs to him and Lynn, the building and the land it stands on belonged to Lynn’s father Jack, who passed away in July of last year.
The land was put into a trust, which United Properties is looking to purchase to develop an Applewood Pointe senior cooperative.
Mark said they have looked into buying the land from the trust since the 1980s, but later on it became too valuable to run a restaurant on.
“There’s not much land left to develop in Shoreview and the restaurant sits on three and a half acres of prime real estate,” Mark said.
The Satts will be able to run Kozlaks’ on the property until at least April of next year.
In the meantime the couple are looking to the future of the family-owned restaurant they have run for 36 years.
“Our dream right now is to stay in the Shoreview area and we are out looking,” Lynn said.
Mark said they just started looking at properties a couple of weeks ago, but have already received several letters of interest from property owners and developers in the Shoreview area and as far away as Wisconsin.
“We have a stack of papers and we will go through each one. Availability and timing are all part of the equation,” Mark said. “We’d love to stay in Shoreview. Customers have responded with some really great ideas, we’ll see how it all pans out. At this point any possibility could be a possibility.”
Mark said Kozlaks’ customers have been like family. The Satt’s have employed dozens, if not hundreds of students from Mounds View and other local high schools as well as adults, and have hosted countless banquets for births, graduations, weddings, funerals and other occasions.
“We’re going to try and create some more great memories,” Mark said.
He said they have plans for some special events such as a customer appreciation night in August, featuring live music from Mark’s band “The JimTones” and “Rocktoberfest,” coming this fall. Details will be posted on the restaurant’s website, along with any new information regarding the move.
