Polars outshoot Titans in decisive boys tennis contest
Veteran experience shows in tilt
In somewhat less than ideal temps but dry conditions of April 30, the North Polars hosted School District 622 archrival Tartan at the tennis venue at the McKnight complex in North St. Paul.
The trip back to Oakdale was made with less enthusiasm for the Titans than the ride on the way to North as a result of a 6-1 loss handed them by the Polars.
North swept all but one of the matches as they dominated a young and inexperienced Tartan squad.
Gaining wins in the singles for the Polars were first singles shotmaker Neil Vruno over Gary Wendlandt 6-2, 6-0.
At number two singles North’s Peter Lindberg topped the Titans’ Nathan Reddy 6-3, 6-2.
In the third singles match Ben Horstman of North prevailed over Tartan’s Broderick Croonquist with a pair of 6-1 sets.
North fourth singles player Dan Schultz shut down Tartan’s Vinh Nguyen in two sets of 6-0 each.
Play headed into doubles action and Oliver Sueper and Nicholas Dunham teamed up for North to cruise to a couple of 6-0 sets at first doubles over Tartan’s Taylor Anderson and Seth Nolby.
In the third doubles match Selam Bekele and Marty Dinh topped the Titans’ Vincent Vang and Abu Alfani in a couple of hard fought sets of 6-3, 6-4.
The lone Tartan match win came at second doubles when Austin Bullard and Zack Lindeman combined to down Jack Standish and Burke Peterson in what was the best match of the day. The Tartan duo combined to gain sets of 6-4, 7-6. That gave North the overall match victory of 6-1 over their foes from Oakdale.
With the lousy weather of this spring it is uncertain when the teams will get to post their next matches. However the Polars are scheduled to next be back on the courts in makeup play at Simley May 8 and Hill-Murray — at the 3M employee complex at Tartan Park in Lake Elmo — May 9.
The Titans will take on Johnson May 8, and South St. Paul May 9 at home. Matches are 3:30 p.m. scheduled starts. In the event of further of inclement weather, rescheduled contests may be found by going to classicsuburban.org online.
