Search for replacement Maplewood police chief underway
Maplewood’s search for a new chief of police is underway with eight finalists currently completing management assessments.
A nationwide advertisement yielded 20 applicants, which was then narrowed down to eight. Until the top three candidates are announced, the applicants’ information will remain private.
City Manager Jim Antonen said the Police Civil Service Commission is expected to certify its top three candidates during the second week in May. After that, Antonen will interview the candidates and contact their references. The three will also have background, psychological and physical checks.
Antonen says the city hopes to announce the top candidate in early June.
“It’s a long selection process, but all the i’s are being dotted and t’s are being crossed,” Antonen said.
Acting police chief Dave Kvam has handled the position since longtime chief Dave Thomalla retired in November 2012. Kvam confirmed with the Review that he has applied for the position.
