Girl Scout Troop earns Bronze Award
Girl Scout Troop 55171, 5th graders at Kaposia Education Center in South St. Paul, has completed their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. This award is a leadership adventure to help girls develop confidence, meet new people, and have fun while they make a difference in their world.
Their two year project was The Dwelling Place, a transitional safe house for women and children who have been subjected to domestic abuse. Residents acquire the necessary skills to achieve independent housing, a sustaining income and violent-free lives.
The troop proceeds from cookie sales and garage sale fund-raisers helped support their project. The girls felt it was a true privilege supporting these families and a wonderful learning experience. Congratulations and great job, girls.
Some somber statistics regarding domestic abuse:
There are more shelters for abused animals than there are shelters for abused women and children.
Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted.
Up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.
