IGH resident named Athena award winner

Caitlyn Russell

Caitlyn Russell, an Inver Grove Heights resident attending Cretin-Derham Hall High School, has been named to the St. Paul Area Athena Awards.

The awards are given to young women who excel in athletics, academics and leadership.

Russell is a four-year letter-winner in hockey, in soccer and in lacrosse for the Raiders. She has been named all-conference twice in each sport -- for a total of six all-conference honors. Russell racked up an all-conference mention once in each sport, as well. She has captained each team.

In Raider soccer, she was named all-state and MVP on offense.

For her achievement in the classrooms at Cretin Derham-Hall, Russell won an academic excellence award. She regularly appears on the school’s President’s List of  high-achieving students.

Outside school, Russell is a volunteer with the Jeremiah Program, where single mothers working their way out of poverty can find shelter and take classes and job-preparation workshops while their children are cared for.

Russell plans to attend the University of Wisconsin -- Eau Claire after graduation this spring.
