As the only team in the Class AA state girls hockey tournament that wasn’t the No. 1 seed in its section, Irondale faced a tough challenge last week at the Xcel Energy Center and Ridder Arena. Producing goals proved to be the most difficult task as the Knights suffered a pair of shutouts in the tournament.
The defending champion Mounds View Mustangs won seven of 12 events at the Section 5AA swimming and diving championship at the Minnetonka East Middle School pool on Saturday. The Mustangs had some impressive performances on the afternoon but Wayzata’s depth was too much for the locals to overcome. The Trojans won the meet with 541 points to runner-up Mounds Viewís 425.
The road to the boys high school hockey tournament kicked off last week but the trip was a short one for Mounds View and Irondale/St. Anthony Village. Both squads lost their playoff openers on Saturday night.
The wrestling teams from Irondale and Mounds View high schools emerged from Saturday’s Section 5AAA individual tournament with three state entrants each. All six will compete starting Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
As the march through the high school winter sports post-season continues, the next sport to kick off section playoffs is girls basketball. All three Bulletin-area high school teams are in action on Thursday.
Roseville Area High School senior Levi Arneberg closes out his prep diving career this week with an appearance in the state meet. Arneberg qualified for the Class AA state competition by finishing third in the Section 5AA diving competition last weekend.
